Pilz Enhances Safety with myPNOZ Modules for Smarter Automation

Published by: EFFSEN | HONGKONG | Date: 2025-05-12

In today's modern manufacturing landscape, safety systems are being stretched to their limits. As machines accelerate in speed and complexity, the demand for adaptable and reliable safety solutions has never been more pressing. Traditional safety setups, often rigid and difficult to scale, struggle to keep pace with evolving production needs, leading to increased downtime, escalating costs, and glaring safety gaps. Pilz is rising to the occasion by introducing an expanded suite of modules for its modular safety relay system, myPNOZ. With five new components—four input modules and one output module—now accessible through the myPNOZ Creator online configuration tool, users can tailor systems that are as precise and scalable as their production demands. From advanced door monitoring to intelligent output control, these modules elevate safety standards and streamline operations with minimized hardware intricacies.

One of the standout features is Pilz's dedicated focus on securing machine access points, such as gates and light curtains. The new PNOZ yi7 input module handles both the monitoring and control of safety guard locking systems. It ensures that machines remain stationary as long as a gate is open, a critical safeguard for workers during maintenance or loading tasks. When paired with Pilz's own locking devices, PSENmlock and PSENslock, the system transforms into a comprehensive safety gate solution.

The PNOZ yi8 module takes a leap forward by supporting both conventional safety switches, like the PSENmag, and electrosensitive protective equipment (ESPE), such as safety light barriers. It offers a streamlined approach to integrating multiple safety devices through a single module, saving time on wiring and programming while expanding safety coverage.

In industrial settings, space and efficiency are as crucial as functionality. Recognizing this, Pilz introduces the new yi5 input module, which houses four safe 2-channel inputs in a single unit. This means fewer modules are needed for systems with numerous safety functions. In practice, users can now implement up to 30 individual safety inputs on a single myPNOZ relay. The outcome? Reduced hardware, lower costs, and more space in already cramped control cabinets.

The new PNOZ yi6 module introduces unprecedented flexibility with "Group OR" safety logic. This allows different input devices to function as alternatives depending on the machine's operating mode. For instance, in automatic mode, safety might rely on a gate sensor and a light curtain. However, in manual mode, the same system could switch to a two-hand control button. With the yi6 module, both configurations can be managed using just one module, simplifying the setup while maintaining stringent safety compliance.

Pilz doesn't stop at inputs; it also boosts output capabilities. The new PNOZ yo5 output module includes four outputs, two of which support delay-on or delay-off functions. Combined with two direct outputs, it provides greater control over timing and response without the need for additional hardware. This reduces the component count and empowers engineers to fine-tune machine reactions in safety-critical scenarios, such as emergency stops or power-down sequences.

All these new modules are accessible through the myPNOZ Creator, Pilz's intuitive online configuration tool that streamlines the design and ordering process. Users can construct their own bespoke safety systems with a few clicks, receiving pre-assembled, pre-tested units that are ready for installation. Each module connects via BUS connectors and draws power from a central head unit, making expansion or modification straightforward as needs evolve.

As automation demands continue to surge, manufacturers require smarter safety systems that can adapt without adding complexity. With these new myPNOZ modules, Pilz delivers precisely that: compact, customizable components that secure access points, simplify system design, and minimize hardware overhead. It's a safety approach that not only meets today's challenges but also lays a solid foundation for tomorrow's innovations.
